Minissha Lamba yearns for a beach vacation

Posted on 28 Oct 2009 at 5:06pm

After sashaying down the ramp in beach wear for designer duo Hemant-Nandita at the ongoing Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW), Bollywood actress Minissha Lamba yearns for a beach vacation.

I’m dying to go on a vacation — some place where I can dive into the blue ocean water and sunbathe. I have had a lot of commitments lately so it was hard to take out time for a holiday,” Minissha said.

The actress, who was the showstopper for designer duo Hemant-Nandita, says she went into the holiday mood as soon as she slipped into the designers’ chic resort wear collection, inspired by “a vacation in Ibiza”.

After wearing this dress, I really think I want to go to Ibiza without all the stress of work,” said Minissha, who walked the ramp confidently in a colourful, flowy dress with prominent work on the neckline.

I really like what Hemant and Nandita have done because no one in India used to treat beach wear and resort wear as a legitimate couture line. And their line offers everything — from swimsuits to flattering gowns with work for a classy dinner at a resort,” she added.

After her glamorous avatar in “Kidnap”, Minissha is now waiting for the release of Shyam Benegal’s comedy “Well Done Abba”, in which she stars alongside Boman Irani and Sammir Dattani.

It is a political satire based in a village — it’s a very different movie. It has its message to it but it isn’t preachy or moralistic,” said the actress who made her debut with off beat film “Yahaan”.

The film is inspired by two short stories — “Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi” by Jeelani Bano and “Phulwa Ka Pul” by Sanjeev, and is produced by Reliance BIG Pictures. It revolves around a Mumbai-based driver who takes a month’s leave to find a groom for his teenage daughter.

Asked if the movie is a conscious effort to experiment with the kind of cinema she has been used to, Minissha said: “There’s no conscious effort. I have always loved whatever I have done.”

Minissha was also seen in “Bachna Ae Haseeno” with Ranbir Kapoor.

TIFF Fashion Blunder">Priyanka Chopra’s TIFF Fashion Blunder

What happened? The usually stylish Bollywood babe Priyanka Chopra attended the Toronto International Film Festival last weekend for the world premiere of her new movie “What’s Your Raashee?” But what we would like to know is what’s with your saree?

The “Dostana” star braved the red carpet in a beige saree by fashion designer Manish Malhotra, who has dressed actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherji and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. And although there was nothing wrong with the saree itself, Priyanka had to go ruin it with a belly button ring and sun glasses! And let’s just say that the short hair and excessive amount of makeup didn’t help! She could have done so much better by simply opting for some hair extensions and less foundation.

We recently published photos of the former Miss World on the cover of Filmfare magazine wearing only a rain coat, and boy did she look hot there! So what went wrong? Maybe the long flight from Mumbai and the Canadian weather had something to do with it? Well either way, we hope that Priyanka Chopra gets back to her fabulous self soon!

Check out the pics below and let us know what you think; does Priyanka Chopra look hot or not at the Toronto International Film Festival’s premiere of “What’s Your Raashee?” Drop us a line.

Bollywood masala creates history in Toronto

Posted on 14 Sep 2009 at 12:25pm

Toronto: Hindi filmDil Bole Hadippa” has created history at the 34th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) by becoming the first-ever full-on Bollywood masala film to have its world premiere in North America‘s top cinema event.

Directed by debutante filmmaker Anurag Singh, “Dil Bole Hadippa” produced by childhood pal Adiyta Chopra, the film stars actors Rani Mukherjee and Shahid Kapoor in lead.

I cannot express how delighted I am,” Anurag told reporters in an interview. “I am aware of the prestige associated with this festival,” said the young director.

TIFF has in the past screened Karan Johar’s “Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna” (2006) and Anees Bazmee’s “Singh is Kinng” (2008) but neither was a world premiere because the two films had arrived in Toronto after their worldwide commercial release.

Dil Bole Hadippa” has had its first public screening at a Gala red carpet event at the Roy Thomson Hall a full five days ahead of its opening.

The lead actress of the film, Rani Mukherjee, who was also in Toronto, attended the premiere before flying back to India for a promotional tour in the run-up to the film’s domestic release. The festival, one of world’s most vibrant celebrations of the art and cinema, would showcase two big-banner Bollywood films this year. Among them are Indo-US co-production, regional features and a Diaspora entry.

Ashutosh Gowariker’s “What’s Your Raashee?”, starring Harman Baweja and Priyanka Chopra would world premiere during the festival.

The idea is to bring the full diversity of Indian cinema to audiences in Toronto. People here are familiar with India’s regional cinema but commercial Hindi films haven’t had the sort of exposure that they deserve. They are an integral part of the Indian cinema landscape, ” TIFF co-director and India programmer Cameron Bailey said.

Director Dev Benegal and actor Abhay Deol will be in Toronto, along with actor-filmmaker Satish Kaushik and actress Tannishtha Chatterjee, to attend the world premiere of “Road, Movie”, an Indo-US joint venture produced by Studio 18 promoted by Indian Film Company and Hollywood’s Susan Landau and Ross Katz.

TIFF will also witness the world premiere of Delhi-born photojournalist-turned-filmmaker Dilip Mehta’s first feature, “Cooking with Stella”, co-scripted by sister Deepa Mehta. The film is a Canadian entry, but was shot entirely in New Delhi with a largely Indian cast.

MFW ramp!">Acid Factory’s acid burns the MFW ramp!

Posted on 14 Sep 2009 at 12:23pm

No fashion fiesta is complete without Bollywood quotient, so how could the ongoing Van Huesen Fashion Week remain virgin.

The upcoming movie Acid Factory’s star cast — Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea along with the director Sanjay Gupta scorched the ramp at Men’s Fashion Week for designer Samant Chauhan.

Aftab stole the show with his cute looks. The Bollywood hunk walked the ramp in silk pant, black shirt and hanging jacket. Ramp scorcher Dino Morea also struted the ramp leaving the audience spell bound.

It’s the last day of India’s first male fair — Van Huesen Men’s Fashion Week, which till now has garnered good response in terms of glamour and style. It was raining Bollywood from the very first day of this male fashion extravaganza.

Three ‘agents of change’ Nitin Bal Chauhan, Samant Chauhan and Zubair Kirmani showcased their energising collection.

College kids walked the ramp with high punk attitude for young designer Nitin Bal Chauhan, whose collection targeted youth. Samant Chauhan’s collection was based on travellers, maps were used as prints on pants and compass and broaches as accessories.

Not only ramp but Bollywood is set to heat up the party after the grand finale, as Bollywood’s bad boy, superstar Salman Khan is expected.

Lisa Ray suffers from Incurable Cancer

Posted on 10 Sep 2009 at 12:10pm

Canadian born Bollywood actress Lisa Ray has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare cancer of the plasma cells, and says the disease is “incurable”.

I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma on June 23. Started my first cycle of treatment July 2. Not long ago. For me, it was a relief to hear what was wrong,” Lisa, 37, posted on her blog http://lisaraniray.wordpress.com/

The plasma cells in my bone marrow were rampaging, multiplying, squeezing out the red blood cells and it was time to begin doing something about it. I was also tired of being tired all the time. So when I sat there with Bobcat, my life partner and reservoir of Yellow, and got the news I didn’t react and I didn’t cry. I’m an actress, believe me, I can be dramatic. Not just then though,” she added.

The model-turned-actress decided to undergo medical examination a few months ago after she felt “exhausted, pale and drained” all the time.

Explaining her disease, Lisa said: “Myeloma is incurable. It’s a relatively rare cancer of the bone marrow… Every year, approximately 2,100 more cases are diagnosed. I’m a junior member in many ways, having been diagnosed at 37, while the average age is 65… makes the disease not quite as ’sexy’ as other cancers.”

However, Lisa Ray is hopeful that “it can be cured” with the new treatments available in the healthcare sector these days.

So today with Velcade and, Revlimid and other promising new treatments in the pipeline, our survival rates are improving. But only with an ever expanding toolbox of treatments and awareness can this cancer be beat. So I’m going to do everything I can to wrench the spotlight onto myeloma and cancer awareness. I believe it can be cured. That’s the dirty realist in me,” she wrote.

Lisa was born to a Bengali father and a Polish mother. She joined showbiz as a model and later ventured into films with Tamil Movie “Nethaji”. After that she was seen in Vikram Bhatt’s “Kasoor” in 2001, but stayed away from mainstream Hindi films as she could not speak the language fluently.

In 2002, internationally renowned filmmaker Deepa Mehta cast her opposite Rahul Khanna in the crossover film “Bollywood Hollywood”. The Canada-based director later repeated Lisa in her Oscar-nominated period drama “Water” (2005), in which she impressed critics with her performance as a young widow.

Lisa Ray has also worked for some Adult Rated Movies like “I Can’t Think Straight” (2007) and “Kill Kill Faster Faster” (2008).

Bollywood’s dimpled beauty has reportedly agreed to do an item number, or what she calls ‘a special song’ for the Salman-Kareena starrer Main Aur Mrs Khanna.

Interestingly, the visual composition of the song and Preity’s outfit is strikingly reminiscent of Ash’s Kajra re.

Preity, however, is quick to clarify that she actually has a role in the film, and therefore the song is more than just an item number.

According to the grapevine, like the title of the song, Preity Zinta is looking Happening.
